This Act may be called The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

[ It extends to the whole of India.]

It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.

The Act has been extended to -(a) The Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu by Regulation 12 of 1962 (w.e.f. 15.8.1963. Goa is now a State, see Act 18 of 1987, Section 3 (w.e.f. 30.5.1987); (b) the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli by Regulation 6 of 1963 (w.e.f. 1.7.1965); (c) the Union territory of Pondicherry by Regulation 7 of 1963 (w.e.f. 1.10.1963).

Brought into force on 15.10.1959 vide S.O. 2307, dated 15.10.1959, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3(ii). In Sikkim brought into force on 1.4.1980 vide Gazette of India, Part II, Section 3(i), dated 29.3.1980.
